LAWNMOWER RACING RULES 2007
 
Driver Safety Rules
1. All racing participants must be at least 16 years old, drivers license verified. NO EXCEPTIONS!
2. Long pants, T-shirts(minimum) and heavy shoes that cover the ankles must be worn.  Gloves are highly recommended.  No sneakers or tennis shoes.
3. Full or open-faced helment designed for racing with goggles or face shield are required.  Neck collar/brace are encouraged.
4. All sharp projections such as bolts, sheet metal, ect. must be removed or protected.  All glass must be removed.
5. No intoxicated driver will be allowed to race.
6. The technical Committee will have the final say whether or not an entry can race.
7. All drivers must sign a waiver releasing group/municipality
from liability.
8. The $50.00 tear down rule will apply at all races. That is, if you want someone tore down, you have to put up $50.00. If the person is caught cheating, you get your $50.00 back. If they are legal, you lose your $50.00 to them, to cover the gasket set and labor of rebuilding.
9. All parts used in building or remodeling or fabrication of your racing lawnmower, must be of lawnmower origin. We still want your machines to look like lawnmowers. If any questions arise, the burden of proof is on the racer.
 
Body and Frame
 
1. Must be full-sized lawn tractor, front engine, steering column behind motor, stamped steel frame and manufactured as such, as delived.  Steering wheel only, no handle bars allowed.
2. Must have an original hood and rear fenders of lawnmover style.
3. Must have a lawnmower frame.  If stock frame is inadequate for racing, it may be reinforced.  No aluminum frames.
4. Minimum 4" ground clearance to frame, 2 1/2" ground to deck.
5. Must be a stock front axle and J-type spindles.  May be strengthened with steel only, May have bearings as long as they are lawnmower type. NO GO-CART SPINDLES!
6. Front axle may be pinned, bolted or welded in the stock position. No suspension, no shock absorbers.  Axles must have a 1-piece beam.  Rubber snubbers may be used to dampen center pivoted fron axles.
7. SHAFT LOCKS, CENTER-DRILLED AXLE WITH LOCKING BOLTS, CASTELLATED NUTS WITH COTTER PINS, AND WASHERS WITH NEW COTTER PINS, ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR SECURING FRONT WHEELS. COTTER PINS, E-RINGS AND C-RINGS ALONE,BENT NAILS, HITCH PINS, OVER-CENTER PINS AND QUICK RELEASE PINS ARE NOT SUFFICIENT FOR WHEEL RETENTION AND ARE NOT APPROVED.
8.Wheel rims must be the same size on each axle, of any origin, made of metal. 5" minimum front rims, 8" minimum rear rims.  No dual or tandem wheels.
9. No offset or stagger.  Body must be mounted in the center of the wheels.  Tires must match in size per axle.  Offset measured only from centerline to the outside of tire sidewall.  Wheelbase may not be altered except by moving the front axle to the front of a non altered stock frame.
10. Maximum 38"  outside tire width.
11. Must have a securely fastened lawnmower seat, may add a bar or panel across the right side of the seat.  If the seat is lower than the rear fenders, must have a rear bumper, steel or aluminum 1" minimum diameter, maximum 24" wide. all bumpers should be no lower than 4" and no higher than 24". No front bumper other than stock.
12. Mowing blades must be removed.  Mowers must mount steel factory decks. Decks must be a minimum of 2" in depth.  The deck must be at least as wide as either running boards or body edges, which ever is wider.  Decks may not extend anymore then 2" beyond the tire sidewalls on each side.  Deck halves may be mounted to the running boards.  Decks must be secure.
13. Wheel bearings allowed as long as lawnmower specific.
14. Traditional lawnmower tires must be used in front and back.  No snow hog, tiller, A.T.V. commercial mower or performance compound or competition kart tires allowed.
15. Footholds must be discrete no more than 2" high, made of flat or "L" stock(no rod stock) and made such that the foot cannnot become entangled in a rollover.
16.  ALL MOWERS MUST HAVE A GOOD OPERATIONAL BRAKE SYSTEM AND BE ABLE TO STOP THE MOWER WITHIN A REASONABLE DISTANCE.  Brakes may be improved in any way.  If a mower has a chain drive/live axel setup, a brake must be mounted to the rear axle in case of chain breakage.
17. Throttle and brake may be relocated from the original position.  REMEMBER-THROTTLE MUST HAVE A RETURN SPRING.
18. The Technical Committee will have the final say on whether a mower is legal to race and will disqualify anyone not in compliance.
 
Track Rules
 
1. Fire extinguisher must be present at the track at every race.
2. If a mower stalls on the track, you must move your mower off the track to restart it and re-enter at the same point on the track.
3. Head-flagger has final say on the conduct of the race.
4. Anyone jumping the start must go to the back of the pack for restart.  Second jump of start will be a disqualification.
5.  Intentional ramming will be grounds for disqualification.
6. Unsportsmanlike conduct will be grounds for disqualification, up to the discretion of the technical committee.
7. If a mower leaves the track, it must re-enter at the same point. No exceptions!   Driver must yield to oncoming traffic.  Failure to do so will be grounds for a disqualification.
8. All drivers must attend drivers meeting.
9. All drivers will be charged $5 per person per event. Minimum age of 16 yrs. allowed in the pits.
10. All drivers should arrive at least 2 hour before announced race time.
11. All drivers must sign a release discharging the municipalty/organization from liability.
12. Flag rules must be followed or you may be disqualified:
GREEN FLAG: Start Racing.
RED FLAG:  All racers stop immediately and wait for instructions from head flag person.
ROLLED-UP BLACK FLAG: Warning from head flag person, you've done something wrong!
BLACK FLAG: Disqualification leave the race immediately, and that means you're out for the day!!!!!
WHITE FLAG: Last lap.
CHECKERED FLAG: End of race, winner gets a vicory lap with checkered flag.
13. Drivers will be assigned number for each race.
14 ANYONE NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RACE.
 
Red Flag
 
1. If a red flag occurs on the first lap, there will be a complete restart, side by side. If a second red flag occurs on the first lap, repeat complete restart, side by side. If a third red flag occurs on the first lap, there will be a single file restart.
2. If the same racer causes two red flags, the racer will restart in the back.
3. If red flags occur after the first lap is completed, there will be a single file restart, with the person causing the red flag starting in the back. If the head-flagger can't determine who caused the red flag, all racers involved in the altercation will be lined up in the back.
4. After a red flag, starting order will be determined by position during the last full lap completed. It will be based on the order the racers crossed the start/finish line in the last full lap completed.
5. Red flag laps do not count toward total laps of race to be completed.
 
Engine and Drive Train
 
1. Any single cylinder, valve-in-block gas engine, originally produced for use on riding lawn mowers, also referred to as an "L" head engine.  NO OVER-HEAD VALVE ENGINES! Engines must be "out of box stock," no internal modifications, including no blueprinting!  External modifications limited to removing the muffler and replacing with a header. Exhaust design is open, but must terminate away from the driver and competitors, in a rearward and/or downward direction and present no apparent safety hazard.
"out of box stock" means:
No porting or polishing
No boring or over sizing cylinder
No head replacement or milling
NO ALTERING STOCK CAMSHAFT
NO MIXING OR MATCHING PARTS FROM DIFFERENT HP ENGINES
 
Engine must have stock balancer: Must use stock valves and springs, no shimming allowed. Engine may be rebuilt, which allows you to:
Hone cylinder wall and reuse stock or aftermarket piston and rings to original specifications for engine size.
MAY NOT BE OVERSIZED AT ALL!
Remove carbon from exhaust and intake ports with de-greaser only. No grinding, wire wheel, sandpaper or steel wool allowed.  No carbureator modifications.  Standard air cleaner preferred, but will allow an aftermarket air cleaner.
2. Ignition must be stock.  Older points systems may be replaced with electronic ignition.  Stock ignition timing only! No advanced timing!
3. Electric or pull starters only.  No push starts. 
4. IT IS NOW OPTIONAL TO HAVE AN OPERATIONAL REVERSE GEAR!
5. Unleaded Pump gas only.  No alcohol based fuel.  Stock fuel system only. No auxiliary fuel systems such as nitrous oxide.
6. Any type throttle may be used but must operate freely and have an operable return spring. 
7.  Gas tank must be securely attached and ressonably protected.  Battery must be well secured and covered. That means under the hood.
8. TRANSMISSION/TRANS-AXLE MUST BE FROM A LAWNMOWER.  Solid axel from a lawnmower may be used.  Burden of proof is on the racer.  i.e. must be able to obtain all parts from a lawn mower dealer.  Differntial may be locked.
9. Clutch must work and be lawnmower type.  No centrifugal clutches.
10.  Any exposed belts/chains must have a guard.
11. Mowers must have an operational runaway, (Driver Dismount) kill or tether switch. Preferably the plug type commonly used in racing.  The tether must be securely attached to the rider any time the engine is running/
12. Rear axel should use shaft locks, center bolts or thru-bolts to secure the rear wheels.
